Portobelo panama

Nice mexicano familia with two kids who habe Been living in Panamá For three months gave me a ride.

There very four fancy motor boats but they were heading north. I went to the office but this egotistical guy who made a lot of assumptions about me gave me some information. Some were helpful and told me if I am
Adventurous take horses to each village where I was told there are no roads. I forgot to ask if that was out of his imagination.

I took the bus from gatun locks to Colon for $.90. I saw a most beautiful sail boat with five tall poles. Some rich life on the boat these people are having. It's not for me though. I found open ocean quite boring.

I finally arrived in Portobelo. Decided to stay in captain jacks hostel. Famous one. Have a connection with Darien gapsters. Nice website. As I expected typical hostel with a boat, tv, wifi. Not my scene but for the same of wifi decided to stay here.

$11 for dorm. $3 for wifi all day. $6 for big salad plate with bread.

Full of tourists. They organize San blas island boat trip here for $550.

Read plenty about island and kuna indigenous people. It's cool but not for that price, doing pretty much nothing on exotic beautiful beaches and speaking English all day is not my thing.

$40 cargo ship sounds more intriguing to me. Tomorrow morning I will head out to miramar to find a boat to puerto obaldia. Boat that I found from a note in Nicaragua, Brazilio said that it's not actually going to puerto obaldia. It could turn into a big problem, or I could get lucky.

Panama

Quedando do Carlos de CS. El es personal especial y divertido historia.

From Panama to Colombia

April 2012

Option1. Take the Boat - cheap

$25 to Carti (San blas)
$50 to estupo (much close to Colombia)
$? Puerto Obaldia (panama)

Getting to Colombia, your goal is to get to Puerto Obaldia to get your passport stamped and take the boat to go to Capurgana (Colombia)

Go to miramar find cargo boats. Bus will drop you off Near the dock. It's a very small town. Boat people are a bit crazy but they are not all bad.
You will see cargo boats loading the goods for kuna people. Every boat goes to different locations so ask. Look for the captain or someone who is second in command because captain is usually in Colon handling logistics.

San Blas is the famous beautiful islands with world class beaches. You can be dropped off at an island that nobody lives and camp there for days.

Downside is that you have to look for another boat from there to get to Puerto Obaldia. Everything costs more once you leave the mainland and don't have much bargaining power for the price to get to Puerto Obaldia. Direct boat to puerto obaldia is rare. If you have no luck finding a boat, you can go to another dock in miramar front of the Chinese grocery store (ocean king). There is a small cargo boat which operates by captain brazillio. They charge $50 to get to estupo but it takes six days. It's a tiny crappy boat. There are four workers. They have a kitchen and bathroom on the boat. Paying $50 would include food for six days. But I didn't take this boat.

You can also find cargo boats from
Colon and Portobelo. It seems that you find captains in Colon but take the boat else where. I waited at Portobelo at the dock but only found expensive sail boat.

Option2 sailboat $450 - $550

There are number of boats operate this through mamallena hostel(panama city) captain jacks hostel (Portobelo). There are also sail boats waiting to take travelers at the dock of Portobelo. Sailboat is clean, beautiful nice, visit all San Blas islands, provide food and housing. Take you to the border. You will find many foreigners who speak English who are from US and Europe.

Option3 fly to Puerto Obaldia $90
I chose this option. One hour flight from Marcos Gelabert airport (not tocumen) through Air Panama
http://www.flyairpanama.com
Usually it's booked out for two to three weeks so you need to make a reservation. From puerto obaldia, take a boat to Capurgana (Colombia) then boat to Turbo.

So I arrive at the airport to check in. Receptionist tells me that flight schedule changed and it's going to depart at 4pm instead of 10:15am . I am slightly annoyed but after traveling for five months in Latin America, gotten used to disorganization. Still they should have sent me an email or a call. The more funny thing happen at around 11am. I decided to just stay in airport coffee shop directly across from reception desk and receptionist tells me that now plane will depart at noon. WTF, what if I left the airport and not come back till 2:30pm as she had instructed me when I arrived. Then I would have completely missed a plane.
I passed through security check at 12:40pm. It's 1:13pm and still have not departed yet.
Another Passenger told me that they received an email from the airline.
After arriving in Puerto Obaldia. I directly went to the immigration to get my passport stamped. when you leave the airport, go one block over, make a right (can only make a right), then you will see immigration office on your left, its a block or two away from the beach.  Need a paper copy of the passport because they dont have a computer with internet, so they collect paper copy of the passport.
I tried to hike to Sapzurro, but I was stopped by the military officer. Boat dock to Capurgana is near the immigracion.
$15 from Obaldia to Capurgana
$32 or $55,000 pesos to go to Turbo from Capurgana. There is only one boat per day 7:30 in the morning. Immigration office in Capurgana opens at 9am.
When i arrived in turbo, there were bunch of people waiting to take passengers for the next popular touristic destination

Option 4 go through Darien
I have heard of people taking four wheel drive but don't don't understand because lots of area are filled with Trees and swamp everywhere.
I have researched this option.
1. Go to Meteti, take the boat that goes toward Caribe. Once the river ends hike toward nearest town pito
2. Go to Yaviza, take the boat toward Limon o Payita. There are no roads as far as I know but river works as road and they are every where just look at the map. Rumor has it that dangerous guerilla will kidnap you but when I talked to locals, they were clueless. When I talk to military personnel, he mentioned but without full confidence.
One day I will cross the border safely and write a book about it. There is a book from a guy who was captured for nine months and released. No ransom.

Costa rica

Rumor has it true. Prices are outrageous. At least this beach town tamarindo. Bought a tomato, two beers and 9 eggs for $6.

However there is much more to it than prices. Met some locals. Very polite and nice people.

Fast Internet in this hostel. $15 per night. Have not paid this much since Mexico. Streets are quite clean and did not see trash on the street like Nicaragua.

Took three hours from Liberia to tamarindo because bus moved slow and made many stops. The girl I met from Liberia was quite tired of this, but no complain. I liked it because I could see large area in a short time. Anomals look healthy and well fed.

Volcán concepción

I talked and asked about 11 people about hiking. Always their first questions were "solo?" or "tiene gia?"

I tell them yes solo, no gia. They always strongly advised not to. Some simply say "no" "no se puede"
"muy peligroso"

It was true about it being a not an easy hike. For being in a good enough condition to run a marathon and have hiked several mountain in WA, USA. I thought these people were just cautious and they didn't seem to hike that much. They just told me stories about some tourist dying.

Truth that I have experienced is this:
People say, 8 hours to go and come back. I made it in 6 hours.

People said there are no mark, so need a guide. Not true there are red marks. However certain area is not very visible as if they forgot to put one or two. I missed two and the guide had to call me who was trailing behind me.

Yes. For those who don't exercise often and have visible chunks of fat in their belly definitely need a guide.

I think it's depends on season too. It's middle of march. Past four days there has been cloud over the peak everyday, cloud moving fast visibly fr the bottom. Yes last twenty min to the peak, wind was gushing faster and faster. Last 70 Meter to the top, wind was pushing me very hard from behind that I could hike faster, however last 30 meter I literally had to crawl because rainy, moisture wind was so strong that I felt like I could fly in the air and fall into the crater, I could feel the ground warm. Did not see smoke or fire in the crater, I couldn't dare stick my head over the edge, afraid that wind was gonna throw me over the edge, last 10 Meter was very very extreme, never felt wind so strong in my life.

Coming down is more dangerous. Yes definitely advised to go with someone because of this. Many sharp rocks every where, wet muddy ground at the top for about forty min before the top.

Only well experienced hiker should be able to go alone. I think Ilan can having hiked in Patagonia as high as 20,000 feet.

I couldn't dare take pictures or video at the top because wind was moisture that I was afraid it would damage my phone.

It was the hardest mountain I climbed.

Day later locals tell me that my guide likes to steal and he is dangerous. Having interacted with him for two days that I knew he is not a nice person but I was able to control hhim well. I let him get away with taking my laundry soap. But he was cheap for a guide.

Ometepete

Paid $25 to rent a motorcycle. When I told them I have never ridden one, they said to teach me.

Thought deeply about this after spending large sum of money for car rental. In the end for the sake of new experience and considering cost of learning in USA I accepted. Yes. I can ride a motorcycle now. Not some automatic bullshit but a real one with clutch and five gears. I went to a real rocky place and it was so much fun jumping in rocks, avoiding big rocks, slowing down and maintaining speed in a sandy area trying not to fall over, thn I got to a real rocky area where only big trucks and SUVs can drive on. I fell by trying to ride in a narrow area between a mound and a Car. Instead of using break, ended up giving more gas. Realized my lack I'd experience to ride in this area. My two fingers scratched with middle finger showing deep wound where it showed white flesh inside, have not seen something like that since my childhood in Korea. But I wanted to continue, then I fell again. Did not get hurt but discouraged and became worrisome about condition of the bike when it would not start right away and locals staring at me and starting to come out to the road. Turned around.

Gave me more confirmation about myself that I have to really feel the burn, hurt, splash, slash, a big slap on my face, strong lesson for me to be cautious. Words from others have mere small effect. Am I too arrogant to think that I am different from majority of the people? Am I naive to think that people are too cautious, scared, less adventuresome than I am? Between me and myself, the answer is no. To show my humbleness, I feel like I am lying to people who showed concern and care to me.

Met a cool 19 year old girl who spike French as a native language, learned English in four months and Spanish in thee months. I envied her.

Maybe I will go back to meet her. But young girls quickly die out for me due to their lack of experience in life.

Managua

Managua was the only capital that I did the a centro aka downtown. When I asked people, they were confused.

For some people it was where malls were located.

I met young prostitutes who were very aggressive.

Met a pretty girl who I danced with at the Above and Beyond concert. It was nice because we exchanged about Dix sentences, she expressed quite nicely about my looks and dancing "Lindo, Lindo Lindo" gave a her a kiss then we danced. No exchange of names or numbers. I liked it.

Visited UNAN, universidad nacional autónomo Nicaragua. Heard the SCHOOL is free and also for foreigners. It was not true at least for me. 7 months commitment including certification $750. It's a cheap price but way too long. Don't want to stay here that long. Purchased three books for learning Spanish for $c50. About two dollars

It's becoming very easy for me to get around, ask for directions and find locations fast. My espanol have improved. However, more I improve more I feel frustration because there are still so much that I don't know.

Presente, pretérito, futuro, presente perfecto are good. There are still five other conjugation.

Becoming more serious about budgeting my expenses. Downloaded three apps and picked a best one. Also purchased more espanol apps.

Checked out club Moods. $c200 for entry but open bar. Found out about it right before I left.

Met people gringos poker players who said money is good in Managua because local players are not experienced. They were party hard. One guy that I liked from Quebec spoke pretty good Spanish, better than me. Continuing to study all the time and taking classes and hiring private teacher.

I left Saturday morning to go to Granada. It was colonial. Many gringos, churches, pretty houses, central park, fancy bars and restaurant. Just as I expected few blocks from the center was filled with poor people and shady houses. Similar feeling to San Cristobal, Antigua and Leon. I decided that I am not going to miss any and decided to leave after being there for about two hours. Stopped by La Tienda in a border of poor and fancy area. Ended up talking to store owner about nazism, consumerism, capitalism, his view on costa rica, Nicaragua, USA, 30 years before Nicaragua and my background. I stayed longer to chat with him because I was able to hear the words and learn new words from him.

Mid age ladies are similar to 아줌마 in Korea. Confident, loud, fast talking, and definitely don't give a fuck. Impolite lady asked me if my other seat was occupied then immediately asked which seat I am going to take. She talked so fast that I had to ask three times first and twice second time.

The lady had about $c50 in her tiny wallet. I felt bad. Income disparity is same as everywhere in my opinion.

People in Nicaragua maybe poor but they are least unhappy and least desperate.

Country with more money have more desperate people. Still remember the the little boy who demanded that I buy flowers from him and forced me say no five times and continued to stated me down with ferocious and vicious look. Still remember boys in Guatemala demanded jewelry from humanitarian lady.

Women are great people. They are honest, kind, not desperate and not aggressive. When it comes to business relationship, exchange of money, they do not cheat, majority of the time offer fair price and have a sense of caring and nurture. It's more rare among men.

The guy who we never exchanged names but want to find in future is the guy who showed me cheap hostel in Nicaragua, esteli and sell mouse trap in honduras. Him and I can work together.

Great salted, spicy nuts being sold between xela, Guatemala and lago de atitlan, guy who gets on the bus to sell.

Altagracia, ometepe

He déjàdo a diferente pueblo, algo mas grande.

He conocido hombro locales de la calle. El trabajando solo apropiado.

Usualmente no me gusta Tipos de el porque ellos decir mentiras a menudo y agresivo.

Esteli, Nicaragua

Upon leaving Leon. I was expecting seven hours trip to esteli. Taking multiple buses.

Met a girl name Tatiana. She didn't speak English. In the middle of the bus ride, she told me about la Tierra caliente. I said lets go look. She resisted. I challenged her, don't remember what I said but she got off the bus with me. There was hot spot like similar to one tiny site of Yellow Stone Park. I was excited to see boiling ground. Never gets old.

We went to get neighborhood so I can use Internet to check CS. We decided to hangout on tuesday. Because I wanted to see university with animals and she is studying to be a veterinarian.

By the third bus, it was dark but locals assured me that it's safe to travel at night. Met a guy who is heading to esteli. He did not speak English. Never introduced each others name. I went to the hostel he was staying because he told me its $c50 roghly $2. Cheapest hospedaje I've ever stayed. Most ghetto as well. He sells mouse traps and wakes up at 3am to go sell in Honduras. We went out together. He introduced me to his girls in the town. She had a beer together.

There was about four CSers. Only one offering couch but she denied. Met with Ariana Camille Herrera. The only one with many reviews and list of friends. Definitely a real CSer. Reminded me of Frida from Acapulco.

Upon meeting her, met with her tourist friends that she met in San Juan del sur but not for long.

She carried exuberant personality and very expressive. I could see there was a lot of charm like Alex. Even curses she was saying had tone of happiness.

Her facial expression and energy is free as if there is nothing to hide. This is best trait about Alex that he attracts many people. There were less as he was getting older which when he came out it was more sweet. Ari is like younger and female version.

She spoke very good English. Her pronunciation was not as good as dani Villanueva but she had deep knowledge of everyday English. It must have been lot of practice from meeting CSers and other media materials from US. She spoke few phrases of Italian, French, Indian. I think there is a hidden talent in her about language. She expressed frustration when there was a barrier to communication. Even when I talk to her in Spanish, she responded with English. As if she was more comfortable talking in English.

I decided that she would make a good partner to go for a drive together. Adventuresome that she is, she only resisted once and quickly got excited. Yes I like these type of people. The yes people. The girl from bus was complete opposite in this sense.

Destination was bluefield. Then changed to corn island. Carrib side of Nicaragua. It was a easy choice as there are only two roads and two towns on the water of Carrib.

It turns out there was no road to bluefield. We stopped in town called Rama. Had to take a boat to bluefield. Two hours. $c200, $8.62 per person.
I paid for her so everything doubled.

It's a remote place. Everything costed more than esteli.

When we arrived in bluefield. We took a boat to bluff. From bluff to corn island was another $c200 per person and five hour boat ride. Quickly my plan for a short two day trip was broken.

We did not make it to little corn island because we were running against time of rented car that charged me $35 per day. As well as maintaining another person s all expense was stressful for me and I had to take many moments to shift my perspective to enjoy the moment.

Rarity of boat and far distances. Had to rent a car for four days. Which I was able to negotiate extra two days to $30 a day. I got extremely upset because my purpose of negotiation was to make total four days to $30 a day. Bu my translator Ari, who is young, naive, honest kind hearted, lack every sense of business negotiation decision was not taking my side and failed to translate exactly word by word, revealing to much of truth rafter than hiding things behind the veil and lost leverage in the negotiation.

If we pretended that we were already back in town and wanted to rent for extra one or two days only if owner agreed that if we would settle at a rate of $30 for all days including two days we already agreed on for $35, and approach was that if owner were to say no then my position was to return the car immediately even though I was stick in corn island. This was my plan and but my lack of my planning in ari's brain changed the approach to very passive and weak.

I dropped this off with a long walk.

Rental car $130 4 days
Gas $65
Boat: $c1664, $70
Hotel: $c350

I hated this money part because I would have wanted to stay longer if I knew it was this far. Should have figured out cost before leaving Rama and availability of the boats and distance/time between bluefield and corn island.

These feelings did not last long and did not stop me from buying candies and food.

First time on my life being in an open ocean where nothing in 360 degrees from me was a cool experience. Very choppy water and big waves shakes the boat so hard that I always had to hold on to something to stand.

I could understand why people get sea sick from fishing boats it was as if I was on discovery channel. Water splashing on the deck of the boat, tourists sick as a dog puking. I was luckily fine. Didn't eat. Don't get motion sickness easily but after over six hours on that boat I was starting to feel something.

There are many Jamaica Descendents. History speaks that they were brought as slaves by British. This area used to be a pirate hub.

People seemed to be well of thanks to fishing business. Heard that Koreans were running fishing business. Pretty large. I saw many boats named 성하 in english.

Talked to quite of bit of locals. One local girl I met in Internet cafe gave me get number after few chat. But never called her. Water was beautiful blue. Definitely would want to visit.

Koreans in Guatemala for clothing business a s here fishing business. For being a tiny country, they are quite spread out internationally with large commercial businesses.

I want one for myself!

.

Saw many fields, beautiful view similar to yellow stone, cows and horses. Gave few hitch hikers rides.

Saw some travelers on the island.

Met one nice restaurant owner to exchange FB contact.

Stopped by managua. Saw a movie. Came back to the same hostel

Hiked a big hill with ari today. We talked about our trip as well as self discovery about ourselves abs giving each other feedback.

Tomorrow I leave to Managua to see Above and Beyond. Bought a ticket through a daily deal.
